If you are unfortunate to suffer an accident, your first concern must be your own health and ensuring that you seek immediate treatment for any injury that has been suffered. It is wholly understandable that after an accident you will experience shock and confusion but it will assist you and us if you can, as soon as is practical, try and take some of the following steps:-
(1) Record details of the accident (what happened and where, the time and date and the names and addresses of all people involved in it).
(2) Obtain the names and addresses of any witnesses to your accident.
(3) Notify the police where appropriate and ask for a police reference number.
(4) Where known, ask for details of the negligent party’s insurance company.
(5) Take photographs of the accident scene and any property damage. If your injuries are visible, photographs of these can be very helpful. It is also helpful to try and ensure that any photographs are dated.
(6) If you are unable to take photographs, a detailed sketch plan can be a useful evidential tool.
(7) Where you have been injured you should seek immediate medical assistance either from your GP or at your local hospital.
(8) Accidents do tend to result in you incurring expenditure. To recover this it will assist us if you can keep a detailed record of all expenses as well as any receipts that you are given.
(9) The majority of accident claims have a 3 year limit for them to be commenced. It is however advisable to contact a solicitor as soon as possible as evidence relating to the accident will be much clearer if obtained at the time and not months, maybe years later.
